J.W. van Rossum, “The Market of Nijmegen / Holland”

This exquisite 15-tile tableau depicts a lively 19th-century market scene in Nijmegen, rendered in ceramic by J.W. van Rossum after a painting by Karel Klinkenberg. Created around 1898 at the renowned Rozenburg factory in The Hague, the work merges fine art and decorative craftsmanship. Framed in its original wood, and inscribed “Rozenburg Den Haag,” this rare piece reflects the Dutch tradition of translating city life into enduring ceramic form. A beautifully preserved example of late 19th-century Dutch plateel art.
